THE CHRISTIAN’S DUAL CITIZENSHIP

The Pharisees tried to get Jesus onto thin ice:  “Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” If Jesus says, “Yes,” then He comes off as siding with Rome against His own people.  If He says, “No,” then He opens Himself up to charges of revolt against Rome.   Holding up a coin, Jesus asks:  “Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?”   “Caesar’s,” they reply. Jesus has them pinned to the mat.  It’s too late to debate the…

PREPARED TO GIVE AN ANSWER!

There is a branch of theology that has to do with the defense and proofs of Christianity.  It is known as “apologetics.”  It has nothing to do with saying you’re sorry for something.  “Apologetics” comes from the Greek word apologia, meaning “defense” or “answer.”  (So the Apology to the Augsburg Confession is a defense of that document).  This word, apologia, occurs several times in the Greek New Testament.  One passage is 1 Peter 3:15-16: “Always be prepared to give an…

OUR DUAL CITIZENSHIP

“Submit to every human authority because of the Lord, whether to the king as the supreme authority, or to governors as those who have been sent by him,” says Peter in his first epistle. Only a few verses earlier, Peter addressed the scattered children of God as “aliens and temporary residents in the world.”   The fact is, we Christians are dual citizens.  By birth we are all citizens of some earthly nation.  And by faith in Christ we are…

THE AUGSBURG CONFESSION – JUNE 25, 1530

On this date in history (June 25, 1530), 487 years ago, the Augsburg Confession was presented by our Lutheran forefathers to Emperor Charles V. Dr. Martin Luther, with a price on his head ever since his famous stand before the emperor at Worms in 1521, corresponded with the Lutheran princes and theologians from the Castle Coburg by a sort of pony-express arrangement.  This arrangement was meant to protect the great reformer.  Even Luther’s most powerful friends were not sure they…

WAITING AND WATCHING

Do you remember Edgar C. Whisenant?   That’s OK.  Like countless others, he had his 15 minutes of fame. Edgar C. Whisenant, was a former NASA engineer and Bible student who predicted the Rapture would occur in 1988, sometime between Sept. 11 and Sept. 13.   He published two books about this, 88 Reasons Why the Rapture Will Be in 1988 and On Borrowed Time. Eventually, 300,000 copies of 88 Reasons were mailed free of charge to ministers across America, and 4.5…

PRAYER POWER

There’s a story from 1529, a year before the Lutherans would present the Augsburg Confession to Emperor Charles V, spelling out the Biblical teachings of grace alone, faith alone and Scripture alone.   Three Lutheran delegates journeyed to Italy to present their protest to the emperor.  One of the guys named Frauentraut boldly told his majesty that in the end they must answer to the Supreme Judge, not to creatures who turn at every wind, and that they would obey…

OUR DUAL CITIZENSHIP

Our first three children entered this world as dual citizens – Americans by virtue of their parents – and Canadian by virtue of their place of birth. When we crossed the border to move back to the States, we laid out all the appropriate paper work at customs while the little nippers slept soundly in the van, oblivious to our crossing in the middle of the night. The apostle Paul knew all about dual citizenship too.  Born of Jewish parentage…
