“LOOK! YOUR KING IS COMING!”

We break from our Sunday morning sermon series on Exodus to ponder the fulfillment of what the prophet Zechariah foretold:  “Look! Your King is coming.” Christ’s entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to the applause of the crowds is the starting pistol for what we have come to call Holy Week.  The “Hosannas!” of the crowds are soon followed by the cries of “Crucify Him!” only days later. “Your King is coming!” is the theme of the entire Old Testament…

THE SERVANT KING

A reporter once did a piece on what it was like for Truman when he left office, for Eisenhower when he went back to his farm at Gettysburg, for Johnson when he went back to his ranch in Texas, for Nixon when he resigned in disgrace, for Ford who barely got a chance at it, for Carter who cried on the plane when returning to his peanut farm in Georgia, for Reagan, Bush, Clinton and so on. The reporter portrayed…

THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD

Each year, as is our custom, we gather to meditate on what has been called “The Greatest Story Ever Told.” It is not a mere story of course.  It certainly is not fiction.  It is fact.  It is history.  It truly happened.   Nor is this true and greatest story ever told only an academic exercise, a dusty old document detached from your life and mine.  It is, instead, the story of God’s bleeding love for every soul ever born.…

WHEN THE CROWDS GO HOME

In the spring of 1521 Dr. Martin Luther was summoned to appear before emperor Charles V on charges of disrupting the church with his teachings. On April 7th he preached what he thought might be his farewell sermon in the church of his old monastery at Wittenberg.  The crowds spilled over into the courtyard.  The students in his lecture room swelled to 400. It took Luther and his group over a week by horse-drawn wagon to reach the city of…

WHAT IS ZION?

“Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!  Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!” said the prophet Zechariah in foretelling Christ’s coming into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. To whom is Zechariah talking?  Maybe you have heard of churches which are named Mount Zion or Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.  A book about the history of one Lutheran Church body years ago was called Zion on the Mississippi. The name Zion occurs 150 times in the Old Testament, especially in the psalms and the prophets. So…

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO KING DAVID

In one of those slam dunk moments, Jesus quizzes the Pharisees:  “What do you think about the Christ?  Whose Son is He?” “Piece of cake,” they imply.  “The Son, that is the Descendant, of David.”  Any Jew with two brain cells functioning knew this.  When Messiah, the Christ, finally came, He would be a Descendant from the family tree of Israel’s greatest king, King David.  God had promised David an everlasting king on an everlasting throne in an everlasting kingdom…

TREES, PLANTS, BRANCHES, ETC.

Back in our seminary days, we often stopped by the seminary book store after lunch.  My first year there, I noticed one of the hundreds of books for sale.  It was entitled:  All The Plants Of The Bible.  My second year it was still sitting there on the shelf. My third year I left to be a vicar. When I returned for my fourth and final year, there it was, gathering dust. “Who in their right mind would buy it?”…
