A NEW SERMON SERIES – GEMS FROM JEREMIAH

Last Sunday we completed our sermon series on The Ten Commandments.  This morning we turn to the Old Testament Prophet Jeremiah. God calls Jeremiah to the prophetic office during the declining days of the southern kingdom of Judah.  The Babylonian empire is bearing down on God’s people of promise, threatening their very existence. But far worse is the enemy within.  Good King Josiah sits on the throne when Jeremiah begins his ministry.  But the kings that follow have shown their backs…

“CROSS-EXAMINATIONS”

Our Lenten sermon series this season will take the form of a “cross-examination” at a courtroom trial.  Each Bible text will present a charge or question which leads to an “examination.” Much of the Passion History of our Savior shows Christ Jesus on trial before Caiphas and Pilate.  But the textual questions posed in our “cross-examinations” place Christ on trial in the courtroom of your heart and mine.  They also place us on trial in the courtroom of the Most…

HIDDEN STRENGTH

The Scriptures tell the story of young Joseph, beloved son of his aging father, Jacob. The godly young man is sold into slavery by his own envious brothers.  Reduced to servitude in the house of an Egyptian named Potiphar, Joseph resists the advances of his boss’s wife. His reason?  “How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”   For Joseph, this has everything to do with God, the Savior who has set us free from sin,…

PROMISES ABOUT PRAYER

In the 16th chapter of John, Jesus says:  “My Father will give you whatever you ask in My name.” Jesus said such things a good many times.  There is no need to tone these words down, to pare the claws of the Lion of Judah.  Jesus means what He says about asking God and receiving.  He knows we need encouragement, for we pray too little and fail to trust Him when we do pray. But our Lord’s invitation to pray…

READY OR NOT?

There are two kinds of people in this world – those who are ready, and those who are not.  For some folks, being ready is an obsession.  Some have their Christmas shopping done in July, their Christmas cookies in the freezer by Thanksgiving, their supper menu planned out two weeks in advance.  On the other end of the scale are those who do their Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve, pick up some cookies from the bakery on the way home…

THE MARRIAGE ARENA

Paul wrote one last letter to young pastor Timothy from death row, his “green mile,” in a Roman dungeon. The old lion in winter sounded a warning:  “Mark this:  There will be terrible times in the last days.” Today we mark the end of the liturgical church year.  Our thoughts turn to the end of this present world.  We see the truth of Paul’s warning all around us, don’t we?  The family feuds, rebellious children, irresponsible parents, recreational sex, gay…

“I HAVE FOUND THE BOOK!”

The Bible tells us of good King Josiah in the waning days of the kingdom of Judah.  He has been called the Martin Luther of the Old Testament.  He got rid of the idols in the land and restored the worship of the one, true God. Somewhere amid all the remodeling, scrubbing and dusting, Hilkiah the High Priest makes an announcement:  “I have found the Book of the Law in the temple of the Lord!” Imagine!  They had lost the…

THE WALLS COME TUMBLING DOWN

President Reagan stood at the Berlin Wall years ago and intoned a dramatic summons:  “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”  Few expected that what Winston Churchill called “the iron curtain” would come down so soon.  It was such an imposing barrier for so many years.  It would almost take a miracle. But the Berlin Wall was nothing compared to the barrier of sin which separates us from God and from our heavenly homeland.  By the blood of Jesus our Savior,…

ENCOUNTERING CHRIST

There is an old saying that when the word of God is preached, a person is either converted or he gets angry. When Jesus Christ spoke, He inspired either the deepest devotion or the hottest anger from those who listened. Many in the modern church these days think they can change this.  They are embarrassed by what Paul called “the offense of the cross.” The spirit of the so-called “Church Growth Movement” has infected people across denominational lines – in…

“OUR FATHER…”

“Lord, teach us to pray,” said the disciples.  So Jesus provided a model prayer, saying:  “After this manner therefore pray ye…Our Father, who art in heaven.”   We would not believe this if Jesus Himself had not taught us to say this.  Those of us who grew up listening to the centuries-old prayers of the Church must have wondered about those prayers.  Many of these old prayers are not that long in themselves.   What strikes us is how much time is…

Welcome!

Whether you are new to the teachings of Jesus, or a long-time veteran of the Christian faith, or coming home to the gospel you learned long ago, we pray that the Holy Spirit may bless you with new or renewed faith through the good news of our Savior who lived, died and rose again to bring us back to His Father.
