So “gay marriage” is now legal in our state…and many others. Those who have been around a few years can be heard saying: “Who would have thought a generation ago that a man could marry another man, that a woman could marry another woman…and that so many would cheer and applaud?”
Bible students know why Sodom and Gomorrah were incinerated by God. Fifteen books of the Bible refer specifically to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
The book of Jude in the New Testament puts it this way: “Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.” In 1 Corinthians 6 Paul says this: “Neither the sexually immoral…nor homosexual offenders will inherit the kingdom of God.” This echoes what Moses told Israel in Leviticus: “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman, for that is detestable to the Lord.”
Romans 1 says: “God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.”
Romans 1 goes on to say: “They know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death.” To say they do not know that these sins are crimes against nature and nature’s God is a lie. They lie first to themselves and then to others, approving of those who do these things. Assorted politicians, educators and entertainers engage in an evangelism of evil – preaching that wrong is right, dark is light, and evil is good.
So what about biological and environmental influences? Listen. Who does not grow up in an environment? We are born enemies of God in general and each person is prone to certain sins in particular – one to drunkenness, another to greed, another to stealing and lying, another to cursing and spousal abuse, another to grudge bearing and another to faithless worry. Every person born into this world has personal weaknesses, demons and bad influences. The bank robber is prone to steal. Should we declare robbery an alternate lifestyle because he was born that way? He’s not greedy! He just has a loving, committed and caring relationship with money!
In 1 Corinthians 6, after listing all those unrepented sins which close the door to heaven – homosexuality being only one of them – Paul says: “That’s what some of you were, but you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” You were those things, but you don’t have to be that anymore. In a world that says “You can’t change,” a world that steals hopes from the hearts of those taken prisoner by sin, let us say: “There is no chain that Jesus cannot break. There is no label Jesus cannot erase. There is no past Jesus cannot forgive. There is no chronic struggle in which Jesus will not help you. He died to do it and to prove it.”
Let us not shrink from placing a loving hand on the shoulder of those who may be trapped in some painful bondage. Let us speak as those who know what it is to be freed from our own chains. Let us tell them that God loves them and that we love them enough to tell them the truth – even if it hurts. But let us speak the truth in love and offer to souls in bondage the same freedom Christ has given us. Let us make plain to them what God has made plain to us: “If the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed!”
